
Tuck writes most of their song's lyrics, as well as guitar riffs and licks, basslines and the compositions as a whole. In his early teens, Tuck was bullied constantly, which fueled and inspired a lot of Bullet For My Valentine's music. The former would inspire him to start learning guitar. The first metal records he bought were Metallica's self-titled record known as The Black Album and Sepultura's Roots.

As a child, Tuck would listen to his dad's vinyl records of Bruce Springsteen and Status Quo. On this tour the band played a cover of Metallica’s Creeping Death. During this show and the ones to follow, support band As I Lay Dying’s vocalist joined Bullet For My Valentine onstage to sing Room 409. At Manchester Apollo the following night, they only played one new song, “Scream, Aim, & Fire”. During the November 2006 tour with As I Lay Dying, Matt Tuck suffered from laryngitis which lead to a number of shows being postponed until early January where they then re-started the rest of their tour again, beggining on the January 3 2007, at the Carling Academy Newcastle, and also played for the first time, two of their new songs “Scream, Aim, & Fire” and “Disappear”. He has also mentioned Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Pantera and Megadeth as being heavy influences in his songwriting. At the age of 14, Tuck discovered the band through MTV where the video for the single “Enter Sandman” was aired, which inspired him to begin learning guitar. Matthew Tuck has cited Metallica as being his main musical influence. Matthew, as well as Jason James and Michael Padget use Rotosound strings on their instruments. However, he tends to use his Jackson models for the majority of live shows. Tuck also owns a Gibson Flying V, which he can be seen using during the live performance of Hand of Blood on a 2005 episode of Die Sarah Kuttner Show. He also uses a Morley Bad Horsie Wah pedal and an Ibanez Tube Screamer. For live performances he has used Mesa/Boogie, Peavey and Fender heads through Mesa/Boogie Rectifier cabinets. Matthew Tuck currently plays a triangular shaped Jackson Randy Rhoads RR1T triangle as well as a standard black model. His MySpace indicates he is a Scientologist. Tuck has also been known to drink excessively. He has been portrayed in the British rock press as somewhat promiscuous which he does not deny.


Before he was in Bullet for My Valentine he worked at a Virgin Megastore in Wales.
